— Title: Understanding One’s Culture —

John: Say cheese!
John: Cheese!
Roy: Why are you holding up your fingers like that?
John: Huh Don’t know this gesture? It represents V for victory. It’s a usual gesture when taking pictures!
Roy: Oh, I think I’ve heard of it. But it has a different meaning in India.
John: Like a scissors in rock, paper, scissors?
Roy: Haha, that, too.
John: What’s the other definition?
Roy: Students in India use it in the classroom as a symbol.
John: What does it mean?
Roy: It means, ‘I want to go take a dump right now.’
Jessica: Haha, sounds cute.
John: I really like this victory sign, but I will try to not use it in the classroom. What if you need to pee?
Roy: Oh, if you need to pee, you just have to stick up your little finger.
John: Wow, that’s interesting! It’s usually a gesture for making a promise.
Jessica: It’s really fun to learn about different cultures! Anyways, I was really confused by a gesture of showing your palm.
Roy: How come? That just means, ‘Stop there,’ or ‘Reject’.
Jessica: You’re right. But in Africa, it’s a gesture of insulting someone. I can’t even tell you what it means.
Roy: I see… I never knew that. I think I should be careful and try to understand other people’s culture.
John: Yeah, you’re absolutely right.
